Sony Animation Delays Its ‘Smurfs’ Reboot

It’s no secret that Sony Pictures Animation’s two live-action/animation hybrid films based on The Smurfs weren’t very well received. The first film, however, was a box office smash. It was a leggy success in North America, but it did even better overseas, grossing a huge $563 million at the end of its run. The Smurfs 2 also made a profit back in the summer of 2013, but it opened rather poorly here (with an unimpressive $17 million, nearly half of what the first film opened with.) and in May 2014, Sony announced that the third film in that series was a goner.

Jason Segel to Write and Co-Direct LEGO Spinoff, The Billion Brick Race

Another LEGO movie is on the way! The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that development has begun on a new big screen LEGO adventure beyond the three previously-announced projects. The new film, titled The Billion Brick Race, will be written and directed by The Muppets and Sex Tape star Jason Segel alongside Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation scribe Drew Pearce!

Genndy Tartakovsky Out as Director of Sony Animation’s ‘Popeye’

Courtesy of Spinoff Online and stemming from an interview on Moviefone, Tartakovsky dropped some bad news concerning the state of his Popeye adaptation. While the project appears to not be canceled, something else has transpired that may be worse.
