This weekend’s Frozen Fever is only a tease for an imminent epidemic. Announced today at Disney’s annual shareholders meeting, Frozen 2 is in development from Walt Disney Animation Studios.
The film will be helmed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, the same directorial duo as Frozen and Frozen Fever. A release date has not been revealed.
Despite the dozens of direct-to-DVD Disney sequels, this will be just the fourth sequel to be produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Frozen 2 follows The Rescuers Down Under (1990), Fantasia 2000, and Winnie the Pooh (2011). It is the first to be led by the same directing team. Rumors indicate potential sequels for Wreck-It Ralph and Big Hero 6, but nothing is official yet. In any case, Frozen 2 is certainly new, uncharted territory for this studio.
This extends Frozen‘s longevity in the Disney empire, and anchors continual buzz for the franchise. Still to come is a permanent attraction in Epcot, a Broadway show, and what is sure to be continued theme park entertainment, TV opportunities, and celebrity tie-ins.
This time last year, the shareholders meeting announced The Incredibles 2 and Cars 3. Also unveiled at this year’s meeting was news of the first Star Wars stand-alone film, The Rogue One, hitting theaters December 16, 2016, followed by Star Wars Episode VIII on May 26, 2017.
