Happy Global Smurfs Day, everyone! Let’s celebrate this day with a first look at Sony Pictures Animation’s upcoming, fully computer-animated, Smurfs movie.

Get Smurfy is the title of the all-new Smurfs movie that is coming to theaters in the Spring of 2017. The film will not be a continuation of the previous live-action hybrid Smurfs films by Sony, but rather a reboot with an all-new story, designs, and voice cast.
The film will tell the origins story of the little blue creatures and answer some long-held questions about the Smurfs, including why there’s only one female Smurf.

In addition to the film’s official title, Sony also revealed three actors who have joined the film’s voice cast and will provide the voices for some of the film’s lead characters. Smurfette will be voiced by platinum-selling pop star Demi Lovato, Rainn Wilson (The Office) is Gargamel and it was also officially confirmed that Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) will provide the voice for Papa Smurf.
“We felt it was important to take a very different approach with this origin story. It returns to the roots of Peyo’s creation in this CG animated adventure,” says producer Jordan Kerner in a statement. “I hope it will delight not only fans but audiences worldwide. We couldn’t be more excited with the talented new cast we’re starting to assemble for our Smurfy reboot. ”

On his production blog, director Kelly Asbury revealed that he had his first recording session with the voice of Smurfette last week. In his post he mentioned that the first, 4-hour, recording session with Demi Lovato blew him away. He also said that he thinks Lovato perfectly captured the wit, strength and humor of Smurfette and he thinks her voice will inspire the team of animators who will soon be animating the character. Asbury will have his first recording sessions with the voices of Papa Smurf and Gargamel this week.
“We have gathered a group of filmmakers and artists who have grown up with these loveable characters, and ‘Get Smurfy’ will be imbued with the same spirit of adventure that first made all of us lifelong fans of these little blue guys…and girl,” explains president of Sony Pictures Animation, Kristine Belson.
Get Smurfy opens in theaters on March 31, 2017
