The SPA Studios, an animation studio based in Spain, released a beautiful first look at one of its upcoming animated projects: Klaus. While the film is not officially in production yet, this teaser gives a first impression at what to expect when it gets financed.
The studio, founded by formed Disney-animator Sergio Pablos, has previously done a lot of work in the animation industry for major animation studios like Disney, Blue Sky and Illumination Entertainment. The studio has delivered some fantastic design, storyboard and animation work on films such as Despicable Meand Rio, and Klaus is one of the original projects they have in development at the moment.
This teaser trailer featured a first look at the animation technique that they’re using where they blend traditional hand-drawn animation with CG animation. People have been anticipating Disney to use their renowned ‘Paperman technique’ on an animated features for quite some time now, so it’s excited to see a smaller European studio work with this technology on a feature instead. The teaser has the charm of traditional animation but remains to have a modern feel to it.
Klaus is not officially in production yet, but currently in search for investors, distribution partners and co-production partners. Hopefully this wonderful teaser and the amazing response to it have interested some companies to help officially start the production of this project.
On June 18, Sergio Pablos will attend Annecy where he will discuss his animation studio as well as previewKlaus. More information about that event can be found here.
